Whether you stumble into a web trap and are forced to stand still for a few minutes, or you activate a lightning bolt trap that instantly kills your mage, these little buggers will ruin your life. There’s a lot of parts of this game that are very experimental by today’s standards, and I love it for that reason. And they really are old games; there’s absolutely no doubting that Baldur’s Gate is showing its age in many ways these days. This is a series built to luxuriate in and it feels perfectly suited to the portable nature of Switch, with the ability to sit back, relax and take your time over things; the early hours of your foray into the world of Baldur’s Gate should absolutely be taken slowly.

Got the EE through Steam again and played BG1 and SoD last year but lost momentum at some point with BG2 and haven’t finished it yet. As if all that RPG greatness wasn’t enough, also included are The Black Pits I and II, that are arena combat-focused with some great encounter design and interesting stories unconnected from the Saga.Trying to translate a features-heavy PC title from mouse and keyboard to a game controller can be a fool's errand, and it certainly is here; the frustration of constantly fighting a terrible UI taints what should be an enjoyable experience of a classic game.

As such, it's worth replaying or trying first the first time if you want to play an RPG, but can't experience Baldur's Gate 3 right now. Its sequel, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn is considered to be even better by some as it builds upon the very solid foundation that its predecessor established.Switch version works nicely on my switch lite, but just like Pillars of Eternity it won't give the same impression compared to the fullscreen gameplay. Running on an upgraded and improved version of the Infinity Engine, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition includes the original Baldur’s Gate adventure, the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion, and all-new content including three new party members. You’ll find yourself dying at the hands of the weakest of enemies in the opening handful of areas, your low-level party prone to waving their weapons around uselessly at fresh air as they take a beating from a handful of imps, or get ravaged by a bunch of tiny rats. If you cast something like Strength on a character with an already hefty Strength stat, they will receive a potentially hefty nerf.
