About this deal

Best Served Cold” by David J Gatward sees DCI Harry Grimm getting to know about his seemingly crime infested posting. When he investigates a tragic farm accident, he is convinced that foul play was involved. But this killer is not the usual type as he has been hardened over the years and is now exacting revenge. Grimm never expected to be dealing with murder in the small tranquil town of Wensleydale. He is not sure if the first instance is murder or something else thought the circusmtances are very troubling. When there is a second very suspicious murder, Harry starts getting overwhelmed given the size of his team. Over the next few days, he starts theorizing that the killer is doing the homicides for revenge on what he believes had happened in the past. Meanwhile, there is so much fear in town that almost nobody comes out of their houses. But this is a killer that is as brutally effective as he is invisible. Some people have been threatening to take the law into their own hands and as DCI Grimm’s wounds from the past begin to open once again, he realizes he is about to journey into Hell itself. It turns out that the small hamlet is nothing like what it seemed like at first. In 1992 aged eighteen years old, David J Gatward published his first work. From then on he was hooked and became obsessed with writing stories and seeing them in print. He would go on to publish several more titles and hold several jobs in publishing. It was during this time that he published the “Dead Trilogy” under Hodder Children. Since then, Gatward has gone on to write for several publishers that include Oxford University Press, Puffin and Random House. He has also worked as a ghost writer and had several of his short stories published even though many of these are now out of print. But his efforts paid off as some of the short horror fiction he wrote during this time were featured in the “HellRaiser” DVD box set. In 2020, he wrote “Mission Creep” of the “Padre” series of novels that would then be followed by the very popular “DCI Harry Grimm” series of novels.

Originally released on February 26, 2021; Shooting Season is fourth in the DCI Harry Grimm series. Here, Harry’s homicide investigation concerns renowned author Charlie Baker who—after postmortem rules out suicide—was seemingly shot dead shortly after his thriller book launch. Londoner Charlie had sojourned in Yorkshire, where he had been marketing his controversial novel, titled The Hunt. In addition to the DCI Harry Grimm series, Gatward has published children’s and teen fiction, taught creative writing sessions, worked as an editor, started a small publishing firm, and returned to writing when the COVID pandemic arrived. He grew up in the Cotswolds and Yorkshire in England (including the town for the setting of Grimm Up North), and he’s also lived in Lincolnshire and the Lake District. This year marks the second visit to Bury for the Grimm Up North team who set up the festival last year in response to extraordinary circumstances faced by their friend Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper) who was in urgent need of funds to raise thousands of pounds for life – saving surgery in South America. Unfortunately, problems (that Harry must reconcile) marred Charlie’s post-novel launch, including: a booing attendant who claimed that the locally-set The Hunt was the work of a ghostwriter; his secretive and untrustworthy three-person support team (including his editor Bless Adam, agent Anna James, and aide Chris Eghart) that is lodging in a converted firing range; Charlie’s alleged drink driving after a booze party accompanied by his friends; and a shotgun found in the crime scene, where Charlie was killed and dumped beside his Porsche car. Grimm Up North is the gripping first book in the Harry Grimm crime fiction series. If you like driven but appealing heroes, British countryside settings, and a dollop of humor, then you’ll love David J. Gatward's fish-out-of-water suspense.

I happen to be going to the Yorkshire Dales in September, and I came across this series on Kindle Unlimited while browsing for a UK Police Procedural to read. That it takes place in places I'm going to visit is, well, a little creepy, but as a fan of UK Police dramas, it's quite good. All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. David J. Gatward lives in Somerset and is the award-winning author of numerous books for children, teenagers and young adults. Grimm Up North is his first crime novel. DCI Harry Grimm tends to drive his superintendent with the Bristol police a bit crazy. He knows his stuff, her gets results, but a lot of people seemed to get beaten up in the process. It doesn’t help that he’s still looking for his father; 20 years before, the man violently abused Grimm’s younger brother and killed his mother. He was never caught. I live in the dales so reading your books is like watching a film in my head. I have been to most of your locations over the years we have lived here. Love all your characters. Thank you for the pleasure you give me and also my son ,who lives abroad is also an avid reader of your books.
