About this deal

It all started so well on the nose, but this batch leaves a bit to be desired on both palate and finish. Following the ascent of bourbon in the global whiskey market, Bushmills has released blends focused on appealing to bourbon consumers with the release of both the Red Bush and Black Bush, both more weighty and barrel driven than the Original.

If they were the only ones I could ever afford to drink, I could be at a very happy place with only these two! The Old Bushmills Distillery is an alcohol (primarily Irish whiskey) distillery in Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, founded in 1784 and owned by Proximo Spirits.Bushmills Distillery Reserve 12-year single malt – exclusively available at the Old Bushmills Distillery, this 12-year aged single malt is matured in oak casks for a rich, complex flavour with notes of sherry, dark chocolate and spices. Palate: There’s pronounced alcohol burn on the tongue, with some fruitiness akin to bubblegum and tart apple. Because of this strong focus on exporting, the United States would become a major component of Bushmills’ success and when prohibition started in 1920, it had a major impact on their business. Time-honoured processes are used for both whiskey creation, from the coopers nailing the metal hoops around the barrels, to glassblowers with the long pipes and 1,600-degree glass furnaces. I tucked the bottle away in a storage container in my basement, leaving it as a last resort, or for guests who prefer imbibing Irish whiskey.

There’s the apples coming in again, along with the vanilla, but there’s also a bit of caramel and some cinnamon spice joining the party. Conclusion: A simple-corked classy bottle containing, quite likely, the most balanced blend to date I’ve tasted. Smooth on the palate and a perfect finish, no harsh aftertaste with a perfect burn left on the tongue, albeit with a couple of small ice cubes added.I generally prefer single malts over blends, but there are a few exceptions - some of Jameson's finest and this particular Bushmills, the Black Bush. I don't normally drink during the week, but this is now the fourth night in a row that I have had a dram or two. The Bushmills team have been hosting whiskey tasting events with artists, highlighting the craft of distilling. After various periods of closure in its subsequent history, the distillery has been in approximately continuous operation since it was rebuilt after a fire in 1885. Bushmills is a small village on the North coast of Northern Ireland, two and a half miles from famous tourist spot, the Giants Causeway.
