About this deal

i think i enjoyed the illustrative presentation of the book more than the story itself, but it was a quick intro to murakami and i am looking forward to reading his other works. I remember I loved those un-Bowdlerized Grimm tales with wolves wolfing down your granny and little kids thrown into the oven for dinner. However, I had a feeling the book made a strong point of not giving in to submission when confronted with strangers.

The Strange Library | Review | The Skinny Haruki Murakami | The Strange Library | Review | The Skinny

This dryly funny, concise fable features all the hallmarks of Murakami’s deadpan magic, along with splashes of Lewis Carroll and the brothers Grimm. Whether he is writing for adults or children, [Murakami] remains a suspenseful and fantastical storyteller. Designed by Chip Kidd and fully illustrated, in full color, throughout, this small format, 96 page volume is a treat for book lovers of all ages. I lie here by myself in the dark at two o'clock in the morning and think about that cell in the library.Murakami loves two things among many: Franz Kafka (think Kafka on the Shore) and secret places (think 1Q84). He makes his way down a long flight of stairs and through the gloomy corridor of a basement he didn’t know existed.

The Strange Library - Murakami, Haruki 9780385354301: The Strange Library - Murakami, Haruki

From internationally acclaimed author Haruki Murakami--a fantastical illustrated short novel about a boy imprisoned in a nightmarish library. If, after a month, he hasn’t succeeded, the old man will feast on the boy’s brains, plump and juicy with knowledge. True, Kafka on the Shore seemed to lack affect, and when IQ84 started to feel more like a test of endurance than a literary sojourn, I put it down. Nightmares can be so terrifying that they cause the dreamer to wake up, but there are also bad dreams where the anxiety never reaches a level that awakens the dreamer. Murakami's work for the first time will be elated by the clarity and wit of his style as translated by Ted Goossen, and intrigued by his characters and the situations they face.
